Outlining Beyond Blue 2

I’m always trying to come up with a better way to outline a new story. For me, this is the most difficult part of creating a book. There is too much going on for me to see it all in my head at one time without using a visual of some sort. When I first started writing, I used a notebook, but as the story developed and situations were changed and characters added, it was difficult to go back and rearrange things. Next, I printed out the synopsis of each chapter on letter size paper and taped it to my wall. I quickly realized that I don’t have enough wall space. I switched to using spreadsheets which worked pretty well, but I found it to be too stifling, especially when developing the flow of a complex story, like Mind Child. Finally, I took my paper-taped-to-the-wall idea and shrunk it down to small sticky-notes in a drawing pad. I write each situation on a sticky-note, color-coded for each character and paste it in the drawing pad in the order of the chapters in the book. If something needs to be changed, I simply switch the sticky-notes. So far it’s been working out pretty good. I’ll keep you posted. No pun intended. #BeyondBlue
